Amazing Birthday Dinner

I wasn’t planning on doing any restaurant reviews on this blog, but this restaurant is AMAZING. We went last night for my birthday dinner. Thank you Chef Deal and staff for another amazing meal! I wanted to share in case you didn’t know about this restaurant. I didn’t find out about it until it had been open for two years, so I was bummed to have missed out on eating there for 2 years. The restaurant is considered a southern bistro where everything is made from scratch with local, seasonal ingredients. This is our special occasion place to go – River and Rail in Roanoke, Virginia.

You should be impressed that we were able to take a minute to take pictures of the food before digging in.

We always start off with the Jar of Pickles. Each vegetable is pickled in a different pickling liquid, so it’s a flavor adventure trying each one. The radish is my favorite, but they are all very good.

Next, we had the Beef Tartar with a Shallot Vinaigrette with Grilled Bread for an appetizer. This was also delicious!

This was my dinner. I usually order a seafood dish, but decided to try something different this time. Last time we ate here, I got the shrimp and grits and it was amazing. But, I am so glad that I decided to try this – Beef Tenderloin with Smoked Mushrooms, Roasted Beets, Blue Cheese and a Parsnip Puree. This dish was amazing! I might have to say that it’s the best steak I’ve ever had or at least in the top 2. The parsnip puree is out of this world. Just about every dish I’ve had at this restaurant includes a vegetable puree and they are always amazing, so smooth and silky.

Scott ordered the Tile fish with smoked trout roe, fennel (roasted or braised, I can’t remember), green beans, tomatoes, potatoes over a broth. His meal was also delicious. There wasn’t much conversation going on, we were too busy eating.

Dessert! This is a scoop of Coconut Jalapeno Sorbet. We each get a scoop of this every time. It is beyond amazing. It has the perfect balance of sweet, salty, coconut goodness. And the jalapeno, it’s hard to describe, you taste the flavor of the pepper and depending on the spiciness of the pepper, you sometimes get a kick at the end. I hope they never take this off the menu, I might literally cry. Scott said this is one of the best things he has ever eaten and he’s not a dessert person. He was asking me Do you think they would tell me how to make it if I promise not to share the recipe? You might notice that I started eating this one before remembering to take a picture – it’s that good! They also included a birthday candle

Sounds like an awesome place. My husband and I keep getting more and more adventurous as we age so I’m sure we’d like this place. I’m glad you had a great birthday dinner.
